Insufficient Response by Debt Collector - USA

The Insufficient Response / Dispute Continued letter is used after you have disputed an alleged unsecured debt and the collector or creditor replies with materials that do not actually establish enforceability, such as a stack of statements, a generic assignment, or a form affidavit that does not prove present ownership/authority and a properly supported balance. The letter preserves the record by clearly stating that the response is insufficient, identifying the key gaps (standing/authority, chain of title, itemization, admissible record support), and re‑asserting the dispute so the paper trail remains consistent if collection activity resumes, negative credit reporting continues, or a lawsuit is later filed.

Instructions:

  • Use this letter only after you have already sent a debt dispute/validation request and received a response you believe is incomplete or generic.
  • Review the generated letter for accuracy against what you received and your own records before sending.
  • Print the letter and handwrite the last four (or full) account number(s) in the designated account field(s) if needed for clarity.
  • Attach copies of the response you received (optional) and keep a complete copy of everything you send.
  • Sign the letter in Blue ink, make a color copy to send and keep your mailing proof and tracking information with your file.
  • Mail using USPS Certified Mail and request a Return Receipt (green card) or USPS Electronic Return Receipt, so you have delivery proof.
  • Log the mailing date, tracking number, and any subsequent responses to maintain an organized record.
